About Community Food Lab
Community Food Lab is a design and consulting firm located in Raleigh, NC, launched in 2013. We advance healthy food systems by connecting principles of social enterprise, deep food system expertise, and design thinking. The Good Parts:
Startup culture- for this project it's currently just me and my two cofounders. It doesn't get much smaller so your efforts definitely count.
Pay - no base but lots of commission.
It's at the American Underground in Downtown Durham. It's a startup incubator and pretty cool place to work.
I'd like to think that by the end of this you'll see exactly how companies are started/ran and how they scale which I consider a good skill.
Closing deals - The feeling that comes when someone signs a contract as a result of your efforts is a magical. I love it. If you've ever scored a game wining shot or won something at the last second... it resembles that.
The Hard Parts:
Cold calling/emailing - I'm doing it too so you won't be alone.
Repetitive nature of cold calling - requires some thick skin.
That's pretty much the hard part but it does a body good.
Good verbal - you'll be talking a lot with potential customers
Good written - you'll be emailing with lots of potential customers. You'll most likely do some web site work too so writing content for the site and working on marketing campaigns could be a part of it.
Hard worker - think athlete type mentality - It takes focused and concentrated effort to move the needle in a startup so someone who is used to working hard usually fits in nicely. They don't actually need to be an athlete but that's just an example. To be more specific they need an "I don't quit" mentality.
Hang loose - Don't take it too seriously. Things change. We're learning as we go so being flexible is key. We're trying to bring the SF culture to NC so you won't need to be too official and wear anything like button downs and dress shoes unless we're meeting clients. I wear a tshirt, shorts and sandals most days.
A few notes from the internship last year:

-a quote from a former intern, "If you want to learn from actual, meaningful experience, go work for these guys. You dive right in to the work that allows you to hone your sales skills while at the same time being some of the main drivers to growing the company. This won't be an ordinary internship of menial tasks."
