Bypass corporate application and email resume directly to email@example.com
The person will work directly with me as I teach/train as much as I can with a focus on sales cycles, but also you'll learn a lot about all operating functions in running a startup.
I lived in San Francisco for 4 years where I founded a company and scaled it to 60+ employees, raising $37mm+ and I'd like to bring some San Francisco culture back to the Triangle. You can find me on linkedin here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mattfinneran/
I'll try to help this person learn a massive background in startups and running a company in exchange for hard work and sales efforts.
The Good Parts:
Startup culture- for this project it's currently just me and my two cofounders. It doesn't get much smaller so your efforts definitely count.
Pay - no base but lots of commission.
It's at the American Underground in Downtown Durham. It's a startup incubator and pretty cool place to work.
I'd like to think that by the end of this you'll see exactly how companies are started/ran and how they scale which I consider a good skill.
Closing deals - The feeling that comes when someone signs a contract as a result of your efforts is a magical. I love it. If you've ever scored a game wining shot or won something at the last second... it resembles that.
The Hard Parts:
Cold calling/emailing - I'm doing it too so you won't be alone.
Repetitive nature of cold calling - requires some thick skin.
That's pretty much the hard part but it does a body good.
Good verbal - you'll be talking a lot with potential customers
Good written - you'll be emailing with lots of potential customers. You'll most likely do some web site work too so writing content for the site and working on marketing campaigns could be a part of it.
Hard worker - think athlete type mentality - It takes focused and concentrated effort to move the needle in a startup so someone who is used to working hard usually fits in nicely. They don't actually need to be an athlete but that's just an example. To be more specific they need an "I don't quit" mentality.
Hang loose - Don't take it too seriously. Things change. We're learning as we go so being flexible is key. We're trying to bring the SF culture to NC so you won't need to be too official and wear anything like button downs and dress shoes unless we're meeting clients. I wear a tshirt, shorts and sandals most days.
A few notes from the internship last year:
-100% job placement for all interns (6)
-a quote from a former intern, "If you want to learn from actual, meaningful experience, go work for these guys. You dive right in to the work that allows you to hone your sales skills while at the same time being some of the main drivers to growing the company. This won't be an ordinary internship of menial tasks."
We are also hiring students to be leaders in our office's in the Role of Field Managers (FMs). FMs are in charge of a 3-6 person team and manage a particular town or site we are campaigning in.
Applications for the summer internship must be submitted by March 24th for consideration. In addition to your resume we’d like to know the following:
- What’s your story?
- Why would you be a good CRISP intern?
- Why digital marketing?
There are few experiences in life as exhilarating as attending a university with many like-minded,
smart, and ambitious individuals that are trying to find their path and make their mark on life. You will
be part of an elite club: alums of an exceptional, well-regarded institution and life-long relationships
that you’ll be able to bank on for many years to come.
You can also count on the university asking for a donation as soon as you skip town. Alumni giving is a
very important source of funding for universities, and there are entire departments dedicated to
reminding you of the education you received. Chances are that you will ignore the many emails,
letters, phone calls asking for money, and you wouldn’t be alone. In fact, nationwide only 8% of
alumni give money to their alma mater, and the rate has been steadily declining for years with no sign
of relenting. Alumni simply see less value in giving back - “What have you done for me lately?”
What we do know is that alums really want to help other graduates of their alma mater .. on their
terms. We also know that asking for advice is not that easy: Who do you ask? What do you ask? How?
Our mission is to help colleges & universities (re)engage their alumni - by giving current students and
alumni more of what they need (help with their ever-changing careers - robots anyone?) and less of
what they don't want (stop asking for money without giving me something first). And help everyone
‘get along’, if you will.
We are an aspiring B-Corporation looking for a smart, passionate sales / marketing intern who is
looking for an opportunity to ‘learn the ropes’, help a growing startup, and make an impact.
What You Will Do
● Identify and engage prospective customers
● Plan, develop and execute lead generation programs
● Translate findings into refined messaging and positioning (what’s working - or not?)
● Assist with market research
● Assist with delivering the product
You Are Really Good At
● Verbal & written communication
● Google Apps
● Learning … this is big
Needless to say you have your own computer, phone, and internet access. You don’t live online, but
Extra Awesome Would Be
● Prior startup sales and/or marketing experience
● Knowledge of Wordpress, CRM/Hubspot, Slack, online survey tools (we love TypeForm)
● Prior email marketing experience
● Great at ignoring “no” and asking “why”
Why Do It?
● Opportunity to join and be instrumental part of a startup focused on fixing alumni frustration
● Monthly scholarship of $500
● Flexible hours (results is the only thing that matters)
● Support of formal internship program (if required)
● The sky is the limit (we also know people that know people)
● Make it a LOT easier to give and receive career advice from a fellow alum
