DurhamCares: Social Entrepreneurship in Action

June 15, 2010

Josh Weatherman and Susan Spencer, both rising seniors in the Minor in Entrepreneurship, are hard at work this summer interning at DurhamCares. DurhamCares is a local non-profit with a vision to see the city of Durham "engaged in serving each other, building relationships across cultural boundaries, and transforming the community through committed involvement."  Specifically, DurhamCares is working to build a sustainable infrastructure of non-profit partners to coordinate and streamline volunteer efforts in the city.

Currently, DurhamCares is participating in the Race Across America, an effort that interns Josh and Susan have been heavily involved in.  Eight Durham residents including Henry Kaestner, Co-Founder of DurhamCares, are riding their bikes from California to Maryland to raise funds and volunteer hours for organizations' partners.

At the American Tobacco Campus in Durham, NC, local leaders and community members are riding in a "mirror event" to support the DurhamCares team as they ride around the clock. Volunteers can sign up for 20-minute-slots throughout the day or night to pedal a stationary bike.  As part of their internship, Josh and Susan helped organize and coordinate the event and even pulled an all-night shift at the ATC to support the effort.
